In 1970, Daniel and Miriam leave their 10-year-old son Mauro with his grandfather Mótel in São Paulo, promising to return before the World Cup starts. But when they arrive, Mótel has just had a heart attack and died, leaving Mauro alone and without knowing where his parents are. He is taken in by his neighbor Shlomo and the Jewish community, making new friends and cheering for the Brazilian team while waiting for his parents to return.
