In the 1870s, a young Sioux named White Bull proves his manhood by taming a wild colt, but is forced to let it go when a cruel cousin claims the horse as their right. The colt, named Tonka, ends up in the hands of a US cavalry captain, while tensions escalate between the Sioux and the US military, led by the bigoted General Custer. The story culminates at the confluence of the Little and Big Horn rivers, where the fates of White Bull and Tonka become intertwined.
