An 11- or 12-year-old boy named Mark moves in with his gruff and solitary aunt Fiona, a naturalist who lives on an island and studies horses. Fiona takes over Mark's education, and as their bond grows, they face a dilemma when a wild horse foal becomes orphaned, requiring their intervention to survive, despite being forbidden from interfering with the horses' natural lives.
