In 1949, Los Angeles reporter Don Reilly, newlywed to photographer Margie, uncovers a racket where gangsters are coercing butcher shops to sell black-market beef. He convinces his editor to let him pursue the story, and with Margie by his side, they track down the gang's hideout on a ranch, where they're stealing cattle with high-tech refrigerated trucks.
