After her husband's tragic death on the Titanic, Louise Créteur must leave her young son Lucien with her father in Normandy and start anew in Paris. She finds work as a maid at the Villa des Roses, a seedy boarding house run by a retired lawyer and his socialite wife. As she navigates her new life, Louise becomes involved with a German painter, but their relationship is complicated and ultimately ends in heartbreak. Just as she's picking up the pieces, the eve of World War I brings a new set of challenges and uncertainties.
