John Thompson, an aircraft engineer, quits his job in New Mexico after a disagreement with his boss and decides to move to California with his girlfriend. However, his plans are disrupted when he's kidnapped by a criminal gang planning to rob his former employer's payroll office. Wearing his uniform, the gang carries out the heist, killing the paymaster and running over a child. John is arrested, convicted of robbery and murder, and sentenced to death. Despite his protests of innocence, he's sent to Death Row. Later, a detective who helped convict John begins to question his guilt and re-examines the evidence, finding inconsistencies that suggest John may have been wrongly accused.
