In the gritty streets of New York City, a talented but struggling artist makes a bold switch, trading his paintbrush for a pair of boxing gloves in pursuit of financial success and romantic connection.

Michael Gordon, an aspiring artist in San Francisco, falls in love with Laurie Rogers, who buys one of his paintings. However, she leaves without a word, and Mike tracks her down to New York City, only to discover she's married to ruthless nightclub owner Rex Durant, who manages boxers. Rex offers to manage Mike as a boxer, and Mike accepts to be close to Laurie, unaware of Rex's sinister hold over his boxers and Laurie herself.
