In post-war Germany, 1945, an American of German heritage arrives, seeking to stay neutral amidst the Allied forces' purges of loyalists. He lands a job as a sleeping car conductor on the Zentropa train line, courtesy of his uncle. However, he soon finds himself caught between the Americans and the powerful railroad family, who exploit his position. As he falls for the railroad magnate's daughter, his neutrality crumbles, forcing him to make tough decisions.
