In 1930s Rome, the city celebrates a lavish parade for the state visit of Adolf Hitler, marking a significant alliance between Italy and Germany. Amidst the festivities, Antonietta Taberi, a stay-at-home mother, misses the parade to attend to her domestic duties. She meets Gabriele, a former radio announcer, when she needs to retrieve her escaped myna bird from his apartment.
