Lt. Col. Paul Tibbets is tasked by Maj. Gen. Vernon C. Brent to lead the testing of the Boeing B-29 bomber, despite being considered insubordinate. Tibbets' team, including Manhattan Project researchers, will conduct the final testing at Wendover Air Force base in Utah, where security will be paramount. Only a select few know the full story, and those who do not are expected to remain silent. The wives, in particular, are seen as a security risk due to their potential to gossip at the hairdresser. Meanwhile, Tibbets' own wife, Lucey, is unaware of the true nature of her husband's mission, and Tibbets himself struggles with the moral implications of dropping an atomic bomb on a Japanese city, wondering if the end justifies the means.
