During the American Civil War, a Union infantry company led by Colonel Claude Brackenbury is demoted and transferred to Fort Hooker after a mishap. The new company, designated as Company Q, consists of misfits and rejects. As they travel to Fort Hooker, they meet prostitutes on a riverboat, including an undercover Confederate spy, Martha Lou Williams, who aims to romance Brackenbury and Heath to gather information. At Fort Hooker, Company Q is tasked with guarding the Union's gold reserves, but they are captured by Confederate guerrillas and Sioux warriors. With no weapons or uniforms, Brackenbury's men must devise a plan to escape and recover the stolen gold before Union General Willoughby arrives to inspect the fort.
