An American Tragedy background

An American Tragedy

A tranquil existence is shattered when a man's concealed history resurfaces, threatening to destroy his chance at happiness and stability.

Clyde Griffiths, a young man from a poor missionary family, aspires to a life of luxury and is drawn to the wealthy society of Lycurgus, New York. He lands a job at the Samuel Griffiths Collar and Shirt factory, run by his uncle, and rises to become a foreman. Despite a rule forbidding foremen from fraternizing with staff, Clyde begins a secret affair with Roberta Alden, a worker in his department. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he meets Sondra Finchley, a high-society belle, and falls in love with her. When Roberta reveals she's pregnant and pressures him to marry her, Clyde is torn between his love for Sondra and his moral obligation to do the right thing.
