Johnny Fraser, a young man from a small town, leaves his mother to pursue a job with a large architecture firm in the city. He becomes friends with Steve Carson, who flaunts his winnings from the racetrack, and Johnny starts betting on the races, losing heavily and taking company money to cover his losses. After being fired and jailed for embezzlement, Johnny's mother helps him, but he can't find work. He becomes the head of a shady firm, Business Engineers, with Steve's help, and marries Madelon, a nightclub singer, unaware that Steve is double-crossing him in business and with Madelon.
