In 1857, a struggling miller and his family move into a humble home, where his wife takes on laundry work to make ends meet. Their 14-year-old daughter, Bernadette, who suffers from asthma and is illiterate, begins to have visions of a beautiful young woman at the Massabielle grotto in February 1858. As Bernadette continues to converse with the apparition, crowds gather around her, and people are miraculously cured by the waters from a spring she clears. The local authorities, however, are skeptical and subject Bernadette to intense scrutiny, but a local monsignor eventually becomes her advocate, championing her untainted wisdom and sincerity throughout.
