Sam Gifford, a southern cotton plantation owner, transforms from an arrogant aristocrat to a humbled and compassionate individual during his experiences in World War II. Initially mobilized as a sergeant, he becomes disillusioned with the cowardice of his lieutenant and is downgraded to a disciplinary battalion. There, he meets a new commanding officer, Captain Waco Grimes, who further erodes his faith in authority. Through his interactions with working-class privates, Sam develops a newfound empathy and matures into a better person.
