In the early 1920s, near the Texas-Mexico border, Charley Eagle, a ranch owner, trains a horse named Black Hope to win the Kentucky Derby. He takes in a young Chinese boy, David Chung, after his father is killed by a smuggling gang. The boy is adopted by Charley and his wife Sarah. When oil is discovered on their land, Charley becomes determined to train the colt of Black Hope, named Black Gold, to achieve his dreams.
