In 1830, the Austrian Empire's Italian provinces are in revolt. Colonel Vultow, an Austrian cavalry officer, is tasked with quelling the rebellion and arresting revolutionary leader Count Adrian Beltrami. Vultow arrives at Adrian's wedding, where he becomes smitten with the Countess Anna-Marie. He blackmails her into sleeping with him to spare her husband's life.
