Ted Howard, a singer, uses his own savings to get his struggling road-show back to New York after it goes broke. He and his partner Mary, a chorus-dancer, initially succeed as a duo, but their relationship is put to the test when Ted is offered a solo act with the musical comedy queen Valenska. Mary, who loves Ted, sacrifices their partnership to let him take the opportunity, but Ted ultimately becomes Valenska's playboy. The tension culminates when Mary returns to the show as a chorus member, causing friction with Valenska.
