After the Civil War, many freed slaves head west in search of a better life. Wagonmaster Buck, a former Union Army sergeant, leads wagon trains of freed slaves across Indian territory, charging fair wages and working with local tribes. However, a group of white outlaws hired by Southern plantation owners attacks wagon trains, destroying supplies and threatening the settlers. Buck encourages the freed slaves to continue their journey, but the outlaws plan to capture and kill him.
