Antonin and his friends, a retired major and canon, spend a lazy summer day swimming and philosophizing in the river. The atmosphere is idyllic, but the weather soon turns and a man arrives with a horse-drawn caravan, introducing himself as Ernie the Conjuror. Ernie performs a magic trick and invites everyone to his evening show, which features his tightrope walking skills and stunning assistant, Anna. As the night progresses, Antonin forms a connection with Anna and the two spend the evening together in the change room. However, their romance is soon complicated when Katherine decides to leave Antonin and move in with Ernie, and the major and canon begin to develop feelings for Anna.
