In the midst of war-torn China, an American mission hospital is led by Dr. Gray Thompson, who is unaware of his colleague Dr. Sara Durand's romantic feelings for him. However, their harmony is disrupted when Gray returns from the US with new equipment and a new wife, Louise, who is consumed by jealousy of Sara. As tensions rise, Louise reveals her cowardice during the first Japanese air raid and demands to take Gray back to the States. Meanwhile, the Japanese prisoner Colonel Yasuda exploits their personal struggles to further his own agenda.
