Mae Doyle, a jaded woman, returns to her childhood fishing village in New York, escaping a life of deceit and heartbreak. She reunites with her brother, Joe, a fisherman, who welcomes her into his home. Mae soon finds herself courted by Jerry D'Amato, a kind and innocent man who owns the boat where Joe works. Jerry introduces Mae to his friend Earl, a rough-around-the-edges projectionist with a troubled marriage. Despite initial reservations, Mae accepts Jerry's proposal and they get married, eventually welcoming a baby girl into their family.
