A former airman, Alexei, marries a young factory worker named Sasha Lvova at the start of the war. He goes missing on a mission and is presumed dead. However, he surprisingly reappears after the war, having survived as a prisoner. Despite his return, everyone except Sasha rejects him, and he's even expelled from the party. Alexei spirals into despair and alcoholism until Stalin's death brings a change in his fortunes.
