Richard Bone, a drifter, is living with his friends Alex and Mo Cutter in Santa Barbara, working at a boat dealership owned by their mutual friend George Swanson. Rich and Mo's past romance is rekindled, but their relationship is complicated by Alex's struggles with PTSD and depression after losing an eye, arm, and leg in Vietnam. When Rich becomes a suspect in the murder of 17-year-old Vicky Duran, he is convinced that the killer is J.J. Cord, a respected oil baron. With the help of Val Duran, Vicky's sister, Alex concocts a scheme to expose Cord by sending him a blackmail letter. Rich agrees to be the front man, but the plan may have unintended consequences on their relationships.
