Peter, a white South African farmer, adopts a cheetah cub named Duma and raises it as his inseparable companion. As the cheetah grows, Peter makes it clear that it will eventually be returned to the wild. However, before this can happen, Peter falls ill and passes away. Xan's mother sells the farm and moves to the city, leaving Xan to face bullying at school. The cheetah escapes, but finds Xan and together they embark on a perilous journey to the mountains, overcoming numerous challenges through courage, intelligence, and the cheetah's instincts.
