Isabel, a young journalist, moves to Vigo, Spain to start her career, but is assigned to write obituaries instead of her desired beat. She receives an anonymous letter about a woman named Lucía and decides to investigate, discovering that the letters were written by a man named Gonzalo. Gonzalo's son Carlos helps Isabel uncover the story, which begins in 1958 when Gonzalo travels to Jérez de la Frontera to design a new wine cellar. There, he meets his friend Hernán's family, including his sister Adela, and becomes attracted to Hernán's fiancée Lucía. The two begin a secret romance, but their happiness is short-lived as Hernán returns early and Adela discovers their affair, leading to her tragic death.
