Elmer, the Great background

Elmer, the Great

A talented baseball player, Elmer Kane, leads the Chicago Cubs to the World Series, defying challenges from unscrupulous gamblers and dishonest pitchers through his exceptional hitting skills.

Elmer's love for Nellie keeps him in Gentryville, but when she rejects him, he's lured to the Chicago Cubs by Mr. Wade. Elmer's exceptional batting skills lead to a winning streak, but Nellie's discovery of him kissing Evelyn ends their relationship. Feeling defeated, Elmer visits a gambling club where he unknowingly loses $5000 and signs a note to cover his debt. With Nellie gone, his teammates' anger, and a debt to the gamblers, Elmer disappears just as the Cubs are about to play the deciding game of the Series.
