In the 1842 novel, an American whaling ship led by Captain Vangs arrives at an island in the South Pacific, where they're searching for fresh water and provisions. The captain refuses to grant his sailors shore leave due to concerns about cannibals and his own moral code. The frustrated sailors, contractually entitled to shore leave, fight with the captain and desert the ship. They seek refuge in the jungle, where they stumble upon a native village inhabited by the Happar and Typee tribes, which are sworn enemies. The sailors are taken in by Fayaway, the grand-daughter of the chief Mehevi, and eventually integrate into the tribe's daily life. However, they remain unaware that their new tribe is the notorious cannibalistic Typee tribe.
