A man, Jacob Horner, suffers a catatonic episode on a railway station and is taken to a peculiar asylum, "The Farm", where he's treated by Doctor D. Following his recovery, Jacob becomes an English lecturer and embarks on a tumultuous affair with Rennie, the wife of a colleague.
