J.J. Hobart, a stage producer, is preparing to launch a new show, unaware that his partners have lost their investment in the stock market. Meanwhile, insurance salesman Rosmer Peek falls for Joan Blondell, a former chorus girl, and her friend Genevieve tries to seduce one of Hobart's partners. The group concocts a plan to insure Hobart for $1 million, then collect the payout after his supposed death. However, when the insurance company discovers Hobart's hypochondria, an assassination attempt goes awry, and Genevieve finds herself falling for Hobart instead. As Hobart's show teeters on collapse due to lack of funds, he suffers a breakdown, and the only way to restore his health is to push through with the production.
