Joey returns from Hawaii with her fiancé, Dr. John Prentice, to introduce him to her parents in San Francisco. Dr. Prentice, a Black widower, needs to fly to Geneva for work, but first, Joey invites him to meet her parents, a liberal art gallery owner and a newspaper publisher. The couple's families come together for dinner, unaware that Joey is white, leading to a day of discussions about their son and daughter's problems.
