A young woman named Nam recounts her story of survival during the Japanese takeover of Hong Kong in 1941. She, a daughter of a wealthy rice merchant, suffers from debilitating seizures. Her childhood friend, Coolie Keung, a former wealthy family member turned impoverished and tough, has fallen in love with her. Meanwhile, Fay, a resourceful actor from the north, arrives with the goal of reaching the US or Australia, and forms a complicated bond with Nam and Keung. However, their plans to escape are foiled by the invasion, and they must navigate danger to survive.
