Ken Saro-Wiwa, a Nigerian author and activist, fought against the Nigerian military regime and Royal Dutch Shell for environmental damage in the Niger Delta region. He witnessed the beginning of oil extraction in the 1950s, which led to environmental degradation and poverty for the Ogoni people. Wiwa established the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, demanding profits from oil extraction. He led peaceful marches, drawing international attention to the Ogoni's plight. Wiwa was wrongfully tried and executed in 1995, along with eight others, in a mass grave with acid.
