Mala returns to her childhood home in Delhi after 10 years at boarding school, only to find her life drastically changed. Her mother has remarried a wealthy man, Khemchand, who is later arrested and sentenced to 7 years in jail for his illicit insurance business. The family is left homeless and is taken in by Vijay, a poor stage artist who has fallen in love with Mala. However, their love is complicated by Mala's pregnancy, which is not Vijay's child, but rather the result of an unknown lover.
