John Putnam, a writer and amateur astronomer, enjoys his new desert home with his girlfriend Ellen, a schoolteacher. However, the townspeople, including Sheriff Matt Warren, don't trust him, and Ellen's feelings for the sheriff are ambiguous. One night, John and Ellen witness a meteorite crash, and John discovers a spaceship and a terrifying creature. Initially, his story is dismissed as madness, but soon the townsfolk begin to act strangely, revealing that they may not be who they seem.
