Anna Aleksandrowna searches for her husband, Captain Andrzej, after the Soviet Union invades Poland in 1939. She finds him among captured Polish officers, but he's taken away to a Russian prison camp. With her daughter Nika, Anna becomes trapped in the Soviet-occupied zone, unable to return to Krakow in the German zone until a brave Russian captain helps them escape.
