Billy the Kid's gang seeks revenge against Sheriff Pat Garrett after he kills their leader. Garrett resigns and assumes a new identity in Tascosa, New Mexico, where he becomes a bartender and falls in love with Sarita McGuire, who was once married to Billy the Kid. Garrett's former deputy, John Poe, discovers him and they decide to return to Lincoln to confront Billy's gang.
