A man in the 1800s consults a necromancer to revive his wife, but is first advised to hear the story of Ernst Haeckel, a medical student obsessed with life, death, and resuscitation. Haeckel's quest for true reanimation leads him to meet Montesquino, a necromancer claiming to bring the dead back to life. When Haeckel's father falls ill, he travels to visit him and seeks shelter in the home of an old man, Wolfram, near a cemetery. There, he meets Wolfram's beautiful young wife, Elise, but soon uncovers the dark secrets of the couple's relationship.
