In 1930s rural Nova Scotia, Maud Dowley, a woman with rheumatoid arthritis, seeks independence from her cruel brother and aunt by taking a job as a housekeeper for a gruff fish seller, Everett Lewis. Despite their antagonistic relationship, Maud finds solace in painting, creating vibrant folk art that reflects her desire to see the world in a brighter light.
