The small town of Mrs. Minerva Snodgrass' Purity League is so strict that no weddings have taken place in over two years. However, when her neighbor Miss Pandora Polly, a free spirit, introduces her daughter Barbara to the town's nerd Eddie, romance begins to blossom. Miss Polly, who reflects on her own missed romantic opportunities, discovers a mysterious spirit in her cellar that stimulates romantic feelings and nerve. As the townspeople, including the Purity League members, indulge in the spirit, secrets and indiscretions from their past are revealed, leading to a change in the town's strict rules and a newfound freedom for the young people.
