A returning WWII veteran returns home to find his nightclub taken over by a gangster, who murdered his partner. The veteran steals $100,000 from the club's safe and seeks refuge at a settlement house run by a kind-hearted woman who mistakes him for a musician. As he learns about her work, a newspaper columnist discovers his true identity and puts the gangster on his trail.
