In Northeastern Brazil, a traveling salesman named José Araújo sells fabric to a Turkish merchant named Turco. After a successful business deal, José attends a ball and meets Dualiba, Turco's 40-year-old virgin daughter. They have a romantic encounter, and Dualiba tells her father about it. José is forced to marry Dualiba, but soon discovers that he's the laughing stock of the town. He changes his name to Ojuara and becomes a fearless lone rider, traveling through the countryside to São Sarué. As he journeys, his legend grows, with people believing he's defeated the devil and many bullies. Along the way, he meets a variety of characters, including a beautiful woman named Jacirene, a circus acrobat named Sue, the evil Mãe de Pantanha, and Eleonora, the daughter of a powerful farmer.
