Philip Carey, a sensitive and talented individual, gives up on his artistic aspirations to pursue a career in medicine. He falls in love with waitress Mildred Rogers, but she rejects him and leaves him for a salesman. She later returns, pregnant and unmarried, and Philip takes her back, becoming engaged to her. However, she runs off with another medical student, and Philip takes her back again, despite her destructive behavior. Eventually, he learns that Mildred is dying, and he must come to terms with their complicated relationship.
