Paul was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2009 and given six months to live. Despite the poor chances of finding a compatible liver donor, Paul received a life-saving transplant on Boxing Day 2009, thanks to a young man who had died in an accident and donated his organs. Paul kept a diary throughout his journey, which was later published as a book. The film "On Borrowed Time" documents Paul's reflections on life, love, art, beauty, religion, and death, using clips from his films to illustrate these themes. The film features interviews with Australian actors and collaborators who have worked with Paul over the years.
