A former vaudevillian music teacher at a New York university joins forces with a patron to convince the Russian Ballet's director to stage a friend's jazz-inspired ballet. Along the way, he becomes embroiled with the company's lead ballerina and even takes on the male lead himself, sparking jealousy and ultimately a plot to kill him on stage.
