Max Wharton, a 39-year-old editor, quits his job at the New York Bulletin to join the Army, much to the dismay of his owner Robert Gow. Wharton's desire to be close to the war is matched by his wife Polly, who leaves her comfortable life to live near the barracks and be with him.
