American hack writer Richard Benson has been hired to write the screenplay for his latest movie, "The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower", with a tight deadline to deliver the final product. With no story ideas and a drinking problem, Benson hires Gabrielle Simpson as his typist, but has squandered away weeks without writing a word. With Meyerheim arriving from Cannes in two days, Benson comes up with a plan to imagine the movie as a day in the life of someone like Gabrielle, and they work on the screenplay together, imagining themselves in the lead roles and subtly steering the story in the direction of their own desires.
