During wartime, the Howard Oil Supply Company is left without salesmen due to the draft, prompting daughter Jean to take to the road to drum up business. Despite her best efforts, she struggles to make a single sale, until she lands a tentative deal with the Black Hills Oil Co. However, her success is short-lived, as Earl, the Black Hills representative, insists on dinner with Jean. As the housing shortage in Clayfield, near Camp Clay, worsens, Jean discovers that she can only secure a place to stay by posing as the wife of a military man. She convinces Lt. Mallory to play along, but things quickly spiral out of control when his commanding officer becomes suspicious of their arrangement, and Jean's father and Earl's mother complicate the situation further.
