Play It As It Lays

A Hollywood star's descent into madness is portrayed as she delves into the traumatic events that led to her hospitalization, ultimately confronting the dark secrets of her troubled past.

Maria Wyeth, a former model and B-movie actress, reminisces about the traumatic events that led to her mental breakdown while strolling through a mental hospital's grounds. Her husband, Carter Lane, a self-absorbed director, neglects her and cheats on her. Maria's loneliness leads to a series of one-night stands, resulting in pregnancy. Her husband divorces her, and she undergoes an illegal abortion. Her only confidant is B.Z., a gay movie producer who has grown weary of the world and believes the meaning of life is nothing. He invites Maria to join him in suicide.
