A weathered pirate, Billy Bones, arrives at the Admiral Benbow tavern, his face bearing scars from a life of turbulent seas and raucous battles. A former member of Captain Flint's crew, Billy's penchant for rum and fearfulness has led him to seek refuge at the inn, where he makes a cryptic promise to pay Jim Hawkins, a young tavern worker, three pence in silver each month, as long as he doesn't encounter a one-legged sailor near the inn.
